The Story Behind Cross & Brew — A Cozy Word Puzzle Born on the Couch
Some of the best ideas come from the simplest moments. This one started on the couch.
My wife had a fresh cup of coffee. I had a word game open on my phone. We were both half-watching Wheel of Fortune, not really paying attention to either. There was something about that evening — relaxed, unhurried, no demands — that felt exactly right.
That feeling is what Cross & Brew is built around.

Word Games Got Complicated
I’ve been playing word puzzle games for years. I genuinely love them — the quiet focus, the satisfaction when a word clicks into place, the way a good puzzle can fill fifteen minutes without you even noticing. For a long time, they were exactly what I needed them to be.
Then, gradually, they weren’t.
The games I loved started feeling less like a quiet escape and more like a slot machine. Pop-ups between every puzzle. Event timers counting down on the home screen. Flashing offers pulling your attention in six directions at once. The simple joy of finding a word got buried under everything else.
I didn’t want to quit word games. I wanted word games to go back to being word games.
So I built one.
Where the Café Came From
The café setting wasn’t planned — it came naturally, because of my wife.
She’s a coffee lover through and through. She genuinely cannot pass a good coffee shop without stopping in. There’s an atmosphere she’s always chased in those places: warm, a little tucked away from the world, unhurried. The kind of spot where time slows down just enough.
It felt like exactly the right home for a word puzzle game that just wants to let you breathe.

How the Game Works
Cross & Brew is a crossword-style word puzzle game. You swipe letters on a rotating wheel to spell words that fill a crossword grid. Find all the required words to complete the puzzle. Discover bonus words along the way to earn extra Beans — the in-game currency that, yes, fits right into the café theme.
There are no timers. No pop-ups. No event countdowns. Just you, the puzzle, and the warm hum of a coffee shop in the background.
The gameplay will feel familiar if you’ve played this style of game before — and that’s intentional. I’m not trying to reinvent the wheel. What I am doing is stripping away everything that doesn’t belong, and wrapping what’s left in an atmosphere that actually makes you want to sit down and stay a while.

The Bean Economy
Most word games use coins, gems, or some abstract currency that feels disconnected from the game. Cross & Brew uses Beans.
You earn Beans by finding bonus words, completing puzzles, and logging in each day. Spend them on hints when you get stuck — a targeted letter reveal, or a Steam Wisp that lights up a few letters to get you moving again. The economy is designed to reward playing, not paying.

Built by One Person, in Florida
I’m Darren. Deck 14 Studios is just me — a solo indie developer based in Freeport, Florida, building games I actually want to play.
Cross & Brew has been in the works for a while — longer than expected, as these things always go. But it’s live now on both the App Store and Google Play, and I’m proud of what it is.
It’ll grow slowly and thoughtfully, with real player feedback shaping every update. I’d rather build something small and good than something big and hollow.

Where to Play
Cross & Brew is free to download on iOS and Android. If you’re someone who just wants to play a word game — no noise, no pressure, just you and the puzzle — I think you’ll feel at home here.
